This is podcast #52. In my original newsletter I had a column called, “From the Drawing Board.” Although that column is long gone, the intention remains. For the last few months, I’ve renewed my acquaintance with marker art, and have been experimenting with markers and colored pencil to re-create iconic pulp and “slick” artwork from the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s. I’ve made a short video showing some of these pieces.
Here is the information about the art and copies seen in my video in the order they appear:
1. “Battle Stories” August, 1931. Original artist unknown.
2. “Argosy” Date: January 10, 1942. Artist: H. J. Ward.
3. “Private Detective” Date: July 1938. Artist: H. J. Ward.
4. “Motion Picture Classics” Date: March 1931. Artist: Marland Stone.
5. “Thrilling Wonder Stories” Date: Fall 1945. Artist: Earle Bergey.
6. Interior illustration from a “slick” magazine. No date. Artist: Walter Baumhofer.
7. “Thrilling Love” Date; June 1944. Artist: Earle Bergey.
8. “Doc Savage Magazine” Date; June 1933. Artist: Walter Baumhofer.
9. “The Popular Magazine” Date: December 1930. Artist: Howard V. Brown.
10. “Perfume Bottle” original painting taken from a vintage photo.
