Raymond Palmer Unearthed: Part 2 — Palmer’s Fate

Fate Magazine and the Emergence of UFO Subculture

Episode 95 — Raymond A. Palmer and the Birth of UFO Subculture

This episode explores the early history of UFO subculture and the flying saucer movement.

Science fiction editor Raymond A. Palmer was never afraid of controversial ideas — and after leaving Amazing Stories, he helped ignite one of the most enduring cultural fascinations of the modern era: flying saucers.

In this episode of The Rocketeer Podcast, I’ll explore Palmer’s post-Amazing career, including the launch of Fate magazine in response to the 1947 “summer of the saucers.” Alongside collaborators like Curtis Fuller and eyewitness Kenneth Arnold, Palmer published some of the earliest serious discussions of UFO sightings and paranormal phenomena, giving a voice to what historian James Webb later called “rejected knowledge.”

Was Palmer a visionary willing to explore the unknown, or a provocateur blurring the line between journalism and mythology? From the Maury Island incident to the rise of the contactee movement, Palmer helped shape a new Space Age folklore that still influences pop culture today.

Though often criticized — and sometimes overlooked — his legacy can be felt everywhere from conspiracy narratives to television classics like The X-Files.

Join me as I examine the complicated life and lasting influence of one of science fiction’s most daring editors.
