I don’t know about any interviews with Pierre Boulle, but that doesn’t mean they’re not out there. I know that Rod Serling is credited on the first movie’s screenplay and it’s possible, maybe even likely, that he knew who Clare Winger Harris was. Had he ever read her story? There’s no way to know. I know who his daughter is and I suppose I could ask her, but don’t really see the need. It may just be one of those lost artifacts, but an interesting one, eh?
Yeah it's an interesting chain of speculative artistic influence. I like how she takes the story to the brink of defeat and then brings it back to triumph.

She had to end it that way, it was the style of the times. During the Great Depression there was a strong sentiment to end stories on an up note. True dystopias, as we see today, would most likely have been rejected by editors. (Except for magazines like Weird Tales.) It's too bad we're in a constant whirlwind of depressive content. It's leaves a bad aftertaste. :(

I was thinking the same thing 😅 there seems to be almost a fetishizing of the bleak ending. We need adversity to appreciate good times!
