Sorry it took so long to comment on this subject. This is a very well done breakdown on the SF and Fantasy fiction and it's origins, as well as the continuing genre.
I have the Starmont reader of Olaf Stapledon, but none of his books yet. Stephen Fabian did the covers.
Love LeGuin, although I haven't jumped into my little mass market boxed set of Earthsea yet. Even though someone recommended it AGES ago...
So much to read, so little "time" left. Need to just develop my remote viewing skills so that I can read whatever, whenever, wherever.
If only I could just absorb everything in my library I haven't read all at once. I use it for escape, sort of, but I also get lots of ideas and nuance on the human condition from EVERYTHING.
So do I! And about time and knowledge...yes, there is so much to absorb and learn. Too much to waste time on the silly programming we are fed on a daily basis. ;-)
FYI: You can find most of Stapledon's free work online, if you don't mind reading PDFs or eBooks.
I mostly don't waste time on that current programming... Very picky and choosy in what I watch and read. Hardly anything new these days, but a FEW. And more into the WOO if it's not straight "fiction".
Was looking for OS books on eBay. Odd John, Starmaker, Sirius... All easily obtainable. I try to limit screen time, especially since it's mostly my phone. Have an older laptop, but mainly just keep files, not do much internet on it. ITunes library...
Another not so veiled reference to your "delight" symbology. Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Delight became Delerium. Apt, eh?
Still haven't been able to bring myself to watch the screen adaptation. Too many liberties with the characters trying to be "progressive". And they ran American Gods into the ground. Started well, but went astray of the original material. Good Omens first season was decent, but I haven't watched the second yet.
I DO recommend the Sandman audio book with full cast. And the same with Good Omens BBC recording. Neil and Terry Pratchett show up as cops in it...
And Neil is one of the best readers of his own material of anyone. Neverwhere and The Graveyard Book were brilliant.
But enough about Neil! I think I've gone off and on about him before?...
Neil Gaiman is very good. I liked his Mirrormask movie quite a bit. Chock full of symbolism. Yes, Delight and Delirium, that's more symbolism. It's a nutshell of how literary direction has turned since the 1960's. *sigh* It's a big boat. I hope we can turn it again, or at least, I hope we can sail it in a new direction. I'm often criticized for using old literature a stepping stone instead of just leaping off the cliff (pun intended) into something entirely new. That the old symbolism is toxic...which of course, it is. But I believe that if we don't understand where we have been, we can't effectively go forward. Just my opinion.
About Stapledon...he is quite brilliant, in my opinion. I consider his body of work the best of all science fiction. There are reasons for that which I will go into another day. Can't do it yet, there some topics that it's best to wait a while to discuss. ;-)

Thanks, Rick! :)
