Who Are the Time Keepers?
Although I call my books science fiction they are, in truth, science fantasy. I don’t use that old term because it is likely to be mistaken. What I’m saying is that I write pseudo-science. I feel pretty shameless about saying it for the very good reason that our science is in a constant state of flux. As an example, during the past century there were ten planets in our solar system. Then there were nine, then eight. Then nine again. There still may be ten, one with an extremely long orbit. There may once have been a huge planet residing between Mars and Jupiter making the count eleven, or ten, or nine. See what I mean…we just don’t know.
As another example, Earth may once have had a runaway greenhouse affect called a “Vapor Canopy” and there may have been giants living then.
Additionally, we may credibly have had functioning anti-gravity devices in the 1940’s but we don’t today. At least publicly.
What is science today is ridiculousness tomorrow. So my choice is to step aside from the issue and write pseudo-science or science fantasy. I include metaphysics in this grouping of topics. Not because I don’t believe in reincarnation and telepathy, I do. I also believe in multiple realities and timeline shifts. But I don’t want to argue about them. I write about things that I believe in. Period.
In today’s column I’ll be introducing you to the Time Keepers, the root stock of the protagonist in ANCHOR: A Strange Tale of Time. My story is about an amnesiac time traveler by the name of Lucy Dean. At least, that’s who she thinks she is. She lives in Seattle in the 1970’s. Lucy has perfect timing—an incredibly accurate sense of time. Also, clocks tend to run backwards when she is running late and then correct themselves so that she isn’t.
Lucy is a Time Keeper, part of a race of higher vibrational beings who have the task of keeping the “Time Roads” clear from meddling by Time Pirates. She is a time agent and is not human, although she does not remember either of these things. The reason for her amnesia is that her partner has been kidnapped. He is Mytah, her “Anchor.” Without him, she can’t return home. But Lucy’s subconscious is aware that there’s something wrong with her. She has crazy dreams and those dreams give her panic attacks. In her dreams she sees a strange device and a great silver arch and her own body atomizing. It’s terrifying!
What she sees is the Time Arch, through which her body must be translated in order for her to exist for long periods of time in the lower dimensions. Her people live outside of linear time and to force their bodies into such a dense state for more than a few hours is detrimental. So they rebuild them atom by atom in order to temporarily become lower dimensional beings. All time agents work in teams of two. Their partner back home is in constant telepathic connection to them, the rope with which they will be drawn home at the end of their assignment.
But Mytah is kidnapped and the connection snaps. Lucy is left adrift and forgets until Mytah is found again. His story, the “he-said” to ANCHOR’S “she-said,” is being written right now. It will be a longer tale, and I’m excited to share it with you. In it, we’ll learn much more about the Time Keepers, and about Mytah himself. I’m also writing another book in this fantastic series about the origin of the Time Keepers. It will come out as the third book, even though it is a prequel.
My Time Keepers may sound like Rip Hunter’s from the comics (and television show) but they are quite different—metaphysical beings who have decided to help humanity across multiple timelines and in many time zones. You will see that they are not omniscient, although they have a broader view than you or me. They are not human but have some human DNA. They are all born with racial genetic memories, except for Mytah. He is just a bit more human than the rest of them and this is fortunate as it makes him an excellent pulp hero.
The Time Keepers are interesting to write as we get to see what happens to higher vibrational beings—who are thought of as angels by people who know about them—when forced to live on a lower vibrational level where violence and sensual pleasures are encouraged. It changes them and often not in a good way.
